Past Meeting Topics

Here is a list of the activities and topics our group has undertaken.

Resource Roundtable

We shared and discussed favorite resources (books, videos, toys, ideas, experiences) related to transracial parenting. As a result we've developed a great resource list for our group!

Discussing Race and Racism

Social Worker and Family Sociologist Michelle Johnson presented the topic of discussing race and racism with your children and extended family. The meeting included real life scenarios and a Q&A session.

White Privilege

Social Worker and Family Sociologist Michelle Johnson explored the core concepts from Peggy McIntosh's classic article "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack" and expanded upon it to relate to issues faced by people of European descent raising children of color.

Juneteenth Celebration

We participated in the 2nd Annual Durham Juneteenth Celebration .There was live entertainment, games, vendors and an emphasis on African American freedom, education and achievement. Our members staffed an informational table about our group.

Youth Activities

Everyone participated in making a group banner celebrating our diverse skin colors. There was a children's music and movement time with instruments and music from different cultures.

Questions for Michelle

Michelle Johnson is an adult transracial/cultural adoptee and social worker. She shared an overview of her experiences and responded to transracial/cultural parenting and life questions from meeting participants.

Inaugural Meeting

We shared information about the group so far, and sought suggestions for future activities.
